Ottawa Branch: CE Course on Biofilm Management
Evening CE at Ottawa Henry Schein Branch
When Henry Schein launched the UC500L, we wanted to do more than simply introduce dentists and hygienists to a new piece of equipment.
We wanted them to experience it.
Together with Henry Schein, we created an interactive CE course for Ottawa-area dental professionals focused on modern biofilm management and the UC500L.
And yes — we brought Dexter along for the ride.

The Challenge
Launching a new technology is one thing. Getting dental professionals excited about it, understanding why it matters, and actually feeling confident using it is another.
The goal was to create a CE experience that connected the science of biofilm management with real-world clinical application — without making participants sit through another “watch the slideshow and go home” course. Especially on a Thursday night after being in a clinic all day...

Our Strategic Approach
We built a course that combined education, demonstration, and hands-on learning.
Participants explored how our understanding of biofilm and periodontal disease has evolved, including the shift toward recognizing dysbiotic biofilm as the primary initiator of periodontal disease. From there, we connected the science to practical clinical workflows and the role of modern biofilm management.
Then came the fun part.
We created a fully functioning operatory with Dexter so participants could actually put the education into practice.
We covered Dexter in simulated biofilm, brought out the disclosing solution, and gave participants the opportunity to see, identify, and disrupt the “biofilm” themselves.
Instead of simply being told how the UC500L works, participants could pick it up, try it, and see the difference firsthand.
Key Results
The course went well beyond the basics.
Participants explored:
- UC500L setup, settings, maintenance, and sterilization
- Modern biofilm management workflows
- Air-polishing techniques and clinical angulation
- Periodontal irrigation
- Targeted calculus removal
- Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis considerations
- Prosthetic and denture biofilm and stain removal
- Restorative preparation
- Case selection and patient considerations
- Aerosol management and geriatric considerations
- Documentation, billing, and coding
The course also explored a variety of clinical situations where biofilm management can play an important role, from orthodontic and periodontal cases to heavy stain, children, prosthetics, implants, and patients with abundant biofilm.
